Minister Helen McEntee TD, meets Romanian Minister for European Affairs

Minister Simon Coveney, European Union, Press Releases, Ireland, Europe, 2018

The Minister of State for European Affairs, Helen McEntee T.D., held a bilateral meeting today with the Romanian Minister for European Affairs, Victor Negrescu.

Minister McEntee welcomed Romania’s support on the Irish issues in the Brexit negotiations:

"The total support of our EU colleagues during the Brexit negotiation process has demonstrated the strength of the EU. There is total support among the EU 27 regarding the need to have the Irish Protocol translated into a legally operable text in the withdrawal agreement by the October EU summit.  Without this, there will be no agreement and no transition period."

Both Ministers also discussed Romania’s presidency of the EU in the first six months of 2019. Minister McEntee said:

"Ireland admires Romania’s motto for their presidency in 2019 - Cohesion: a Common European Value – which is a timely reminder of the value and importance of EU cohesion funding.  We support Romania’s strong views about protecting cohesion funding and CAP funding in the new EU Budget negotiations that are just getting underway."

Minister McEntee outlined the Citizens’ Dialogues on the Future of Europe, which Ireland held throughout the country earlier this year. In addition, Minister McEntee and Minister Negrescu discussed the European Social Rights Pillar and EU enlargement.

Later today, Minister Negrescu will speak at the Institute of International and European Affairs on the topic of ‘A vision for a stronger and more cohesive European Union.’
