Tánaiste Simon Coveney and Minister of State Helen McEntee attend General Affairs Council

Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade, Simon Coveney, T.D., and Minister of State for European Affairs, Helen McEntee, T.D., travel to Brussels for meeting of General Affairs Council

Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade, Simon Coveney, T.D., and Minister of State for European Affairs, Helen McEntee, T.D., are in Brussels today, Monday 19 November, for meetings with their counterparts at the General Affairs Council.

Speaking before the meeting, the Tánaiste said:

“After months of negotiations, we are pleased to be in a position to discuss the finalised Withdrawal Agreement and outline of the Joint Political Declaration with our EU partners. This is a positive development, albeit against the backdrop of our shared regret that the UK is leaving the EU.

It will also offer an opportunity for me to express my thanks to Michel Barnier and his exceptional team. Their deep understanding of the unique nature of the Irish issues throughout this process has produced a withdrawal text with the protection of the Good Friday Agreement at its core. The Commission team has found innovative and practical solutions to complex problems and Ireland is extremely grateful for their commitment all through what has been a difficult process.”

Ahead of the meeting the Minister of State McEntee said:

“Today offers an opportunity to once again thank our EU partners for the support and solidarity that they have shown us since this process began. We are not at the end of the road yet, there is important work still ahead and today’s meeting is another key step on the road to the European Council next Sunday.”
