Passport Service- Latest Turnaround Information

These turnaround times are for applications submitted in Ireland & Great Britain and via our Online Passport Renewal Service. If you submitted an application through an Embassy or Consulate abroad, please see the Embassy website for your country of residence.

Turnaround times are estimates based on current averages. They are not a service delivery guarantee.

If you are renewing your passport, our Online Passport Renewal Service is the cheapest and most convenient way to renew a passport.  This service can be used by Irish citizens living anywhere in the world and is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.

Remember: First-time applications take at least 4 weeks whether they are submitted by Passport Express or at the Public Counter.

* The turnaround times for our Online Passport Renewal Service do not include postage time. Where documents are required to support your application, processing of the application will not begin until the supporting documents have been received.

Applicants are strongly advised not to book flights until they have their passport.

First time Applicants

  • The Passport Service strongly advises that you apply at least six weeks ahead of your intended date of travel.
  • Please see here for information on the most convenient way to apply for a first passport.
  • First time applications take longer to process than passport renewals due to the additional security measures required.

Passport Renewals

  • The Passport Service strongly advises that you apply at least six weeks ahead of your intended date of travel. Always check you and your family’s passport expiry date before you book a trip.
  • If you are renewing your passport, you may be able to use our Online Passport Renewal Service. Renewing online is the cheapest and most convenient way to renew a passport and it can be done anywhere in the world, 24 hours per day, 365 days per year.
  • If you are not eligible for the online service, or do not wish to submit your application online, you can still renew your passport via Passport Express. Please see here for further details on Passport Express options for Ireland, Northern Ireland and Great Britain. Residents of Great Britain can apply through the Embassy of Ireland, Great Britain.
  • The Passport Service aims to process Passport Express applications within 15 working days of receipt (provided that the application form and documentation are all in order). However turnaround times are a guideline only and will vary depending on the level of seasonal demand and other factors. Applicants are urged to apply well in advance of intended travel and to take care to carefully complete application forms and ensure any accompanying documents required are supplied.
  • If you require your passport to be renewed in a timeframe shorter than what is offered by Passport Express or the Online Passport Renewal Service, you can make an appointment for the service at the Passport Service in Dublin or Cork. Appointments must be booked online.
  • For those who need to renew their passport and are travelling within the next three days, the Passport Service operates a limited rapid renewal service at the Passport Office in Dublin. This service is strictly by appointment only. There are a limited number of appointments available per day and proof of travel will be required. Click here for further information.
  • Applications to replace lost, stolen or damaged passports require extra security checks. Allow at least four weeks (twenty working days) for these applications to process.
